Station Between

She was in a hurry. The ticket says it needs to be at the station at Pi hour. She roamed the dark platforms. The right platform will appear only at the right time. She looked at the clock — 3.12. In two minutes. If the Damned woman did not deceive, then in two minutes her bus will come and take her to the Dark Side.

On the dark side

She got out of the vagon and turned around. The Damned did not deceive. The train has indeed arrived. At Pi hour. The conductor cast a glance at her, looked at the ticket and let her into the wagon. She was not alone on the train, in general, there were quite a lot of people. Do they all go to the Dark Side? But she did not dare to speak to anyone. Indeed, it is not from a good life that people go there. She didn’t want to be questioned herself.
— The dark side,- an insinuating voice announced, and Radha shuddered. People went to the exits. And some remained seated. Where are they going? Is there something even further?
People came out onto the platform, Radha too. Someone was met, porters came up, took suitcases. Someone rushed to the arrivals, hugging them. And everyone they came for disappeared into the darkness. Soon Radha was left alone. No one here expected or met her. On the platform, a lantern dispelled the darkness, illuminating a patch of the station and the carriages of the standing train. If it were not there, then the darkness would be continuous.
Where should she go now?
Two stewarts passed by, one she already knew.
— Damned lantern, it lights and lights,- he swore.
— So this is still one of those, real ones, how can you extinguish it? — respectfully responded the second.
— I don’t like all this, the real, nothing can be done with it. And you never know where it will jump out at you, — the conductor said annoyed and emotionally.
— But you can distract people from these fragments, — the second one laughed, — with a brighter picture.
The voices faded away and soon the couple also disappeared into the darkness.
— Sweet lady! Hey! — someone suddenly called out.
Radha turned around. Is that for her? A young man walked quickly from the carriage towards her.
— It’s me who called you, — he smiled.
Radha also smiled involuntarily. The guy was kind of all bright, he didn’t belong here at all. Probably, he also came for something for which it is impossible.

— Don’t you know where to go?
— Not yet.
— And I don’t know, let’s go together, huh? We’ll figure it out there.
The offer seemed tempting to her. Still to be alone on the Dark Side is scary.
Radha nodded.
— And you?..
— My name is Alisher.
— Radha. — she smiled.
— Have you just arrived?
Radha nodded, but thought that she could not see in the darkness and said:
— Yes, also by this train, I’m here for the first time.
— It’s ok, I don’t think it will be very difficult to figure it out here, — he said.
She liked his confidence. It’s good, he is on the Dark Side for the first time, and do not lose heart.
She, of course, did not see that the creatures of darkness, seeing her companion, cringe in fear and prefer to get away from the couple wandering in the dark.

Hospitality of the Last Resort

— Welcome, welcome, and here you are, finally arrived, — a monster with an insect body, branched arms and a humanoid face walked towards the couple from the purple darkness.
The gender of the creature was impossible to determine. At least Radha couldn’t. Noisy, sinisterly cheerful, feigned ingratiating something did not seem more dangerous than anything that was here on the Dark Side. The creature did not inspire confidence, but it did not frighten, at least after the first «oops».
— How glad I am, I am Faypari, you can call me Faya, — the creature introduced itself.
— Hello, — Alisher stepped towards the monster and opened his arms.
Faypari incredulously but cheerfully looked at the man, waved his hand and stepped towards him. Branches-arms lashed the man’s back, wrapping around him.
Radha screamed. Alisher hugged Faypari back. There were more and more branches, they slid along Alisher’s shirt and pants, poking inside with thin sharp processes, as if trying to pierce him.
Alisher pulled back a little, still smiling amiably, looking into Faypari’s face.
— Does the fireplace work in the rooms? — he asked honey, — is there enough firewood?
— Well, I’m sorry, I couldn’t help but try, — Faypari said embarrassedly, hoping for understanding, releasing Alisher, taking away the branches and carefully straightening the shirt on the man.
— Are you Radha? A beginner?
— You know… — the girl tried to assess what had happened. It looks like Alisher knows this monster. It will be necessary to ask him… the first fear passed and Radha was delighted that her acquaintance knew something about this place.
— Of course, dear, of course! All visitors come here, so of course I know, let’s go. You will have a nice room.
— And how much … how much does it cost?
Faypari glanced at Alisher, met his heavenly gaze and flashed a smile.

— Nothing, dear. The room is included in the payment for why you are here. When you pay for what you want to get here, poor Faypari will also be paid. Breakfast and lunch are included, by the way.
Alisher chuckled.
It was also dark inside, only the place where the guests were walking was illuminated.
— Only you need to leave a deposit for the key,- Faypari smiled, laying the carved key on the counter.
— Yes, how much? — Radha nodded.
— Oh, just a nail, I’ll return it when you leave. Here, — Faypari pointed to the scissors in the organizer, which lit up from the darkness.
And Alisher appeared out of the darkness.
— I’ll pay bail for both of us,- the man smiled as he took the scissors.
— Yeah? Oh, stop it, Alisher, if so, since you vouch for the new one, you don’t need a deposit, — Faypari said politely. It suddenly seemed to Radha that the monster was afraid of something.
— Well, rules are rules, — the darkness distorted Alisher’s features and, as it often seems in the dark, he seemed to be grinning, not smiling.

— Don’t! — Faypari squealed, and the organizer and scissors disappeared. The monster immediately smiled politely again. — Do you want one room?
Faypari snarled through his teeth.
Alisher shrugged and looked at Radha. She was embarrassed to stay with a stranger in the same room, but she did not want to be alone in this place either.
— I don’t mind, — said Alisher and smiled at Radha, — it’s always crowded here, so if you don’t mind…
— No, — Radha smiled with relief, — I don’t want to be alone.
The girl confessed and she immediately felt somehow easier.
— Second floor, number 13,- Faypari muttered.
— Thank you, — mockingly thanked Alisher.
As the couple disappeared from view, Faypari’s smile faded.

— Why does he need this new one? — a creature similar to a potato appeared on the counter.
— Who knows, Atok, we don’t know what she’s done.
— Yes, — Atok, the embodiment of a curse, stretched out his legs-protrusions, sighing noisily, — but something bad, very bad, since Alisher came.
— The cat dragged in, — Faypari nodded. — why he does not sit in his halls.

By the Black Hermit

— H… hello, — Radha greeted.
A dark figure suddenly appeared in front of her, illuminating the space.
Radha even closed her eyes, so unaccustomed she was to the bright sky on the Dark Side.
The Black Hermit pointed at her with a thin broken rod.
— What do you want?
— You know, Keilash was pulled to the Dark Side, I would like to find him and… return him.
The hermit nodded, probably with such requests they often came to him. Why else?
— To draw someone from the Dark Side, you have to leave something to the Dark Side. What do you have?
— I don’t know, what do you need?
— You need to stain part of your heart with darkness. Do something you would never do because it’s terrible. Then the Dark Side will keep your deed, and your Keilash, whoever he may be, will go back.
What terrible thing should I do and where? Here? There? Will it happen on its own after I do something terrible?
— Yes, of course, — the Hermit seemed to grin, — only your act should be worse than the act of Keilash.

A piece of the Real

The crackling and rumbling grew stronger and louder
‘What is it?’ Radha looked around, but nothing could be seen in the darkness.
‘The darkness has gone out to hunt,’ Alisher squeezed Radha’s hand tighter and led her forward with purpose.
‘Hunting? For us?’
‘No, or rather, it doesn’t care. It just needs something to eat and it goes out to hunt.’
‘It eats the inhabitants?’
‘It doesn’t eat them, it sucks the light out.’
‘And then what?’ Radha tried not to stumble or lag behind, to keep pace with Alisher.
‘Nothing. No light, no hope. No desire. Nothing to strive for. Nothing to want.’
Radha shivered.
‘Should… should we run?’
‘We can’t, then it’ll think we’re victims.’
‘Do… do you know what to do? How to escape it’
‘From the Darkness? In the real light.’
‘Is there real light here on the Dark Side?’
‘I’ve told you before, there’s the real everywhere, including the light.
An emerald patch of forest glowed before them in the featureless darkness.
‘This way,’ Alisher jerked Radha sharply, rushing there.
The girl almost fell down, but leaned on the man and held her ground.
Radha looked around, wanted to touch the trunk of the tree, but cut off the movement.
‘The present was not dangerous. Or rather… it’s dangerous, but only for a lie.
The man sat down on the grass.
‘Let’s wait over here.’
Radha expected the Darkness to howl around the patch where the couple had taken refuge, to try to lure them out, but it was as if the Darkness didn’t notice them or the emerald oasis that had somehow miraculously ended up on the Dark Side.
There was a shriek, someone rushed toward them, screamed even louder, twitching from the burns, the Darkness suddenly quieted, the screaming too, and the humming began to recede. The creature, dim and faded, froze in the darkness, staring blankly before it.
Radha shivered and touched Alisher’s hand.
‘It is gnetko. An unclean that oppresses people at night. Feeds on their fears and grief. It won’t do that anymore. It’ll do nothing now, just hang around the Dark Side.
‘So the Darkness did a good thing?’
Alisher grinned.
‘Every deed is a good for someone.’

Walking along the real

«I feel like I’ve been dreaming about the light. I feel like I’ve been here forever, like I’ve always been here.»
Radha sighed and popped a breadcrumb into her mouth.
«It’s always been like this,» Alisher said thoughtfully, «the dark side is always around. One step and you’re stuck. And it’s hard to get to the light side again.»
«Why? Why is it difficult?»
«It’s shameful», Alisher smiled. «After being in darkness, to be in the light so shameful that many people choose to stay on the dark side. They start justifying it, praising it even, looking for beauty in it. All because of cowardice.»
Radha sighed.
«It seems that darkness cannot be fought, it absorbs everything, everything.»
«Darkness absorbs only the false. It can’t absorb the real. See,» Alisher pointed at the shining spot.
«I see it, but it’s dark all around. And all these creatures…» Radha shuddered.
«Let’s sleep, and tomorrow I’ll show you something.»
XXXX
Radha opened her eyes and marveled. She was lying in a hammock and above her the blue sky was shining unbearably. It was a bright day all around. Radha realized that she had to close her eyes and wake up from this dream. A wonderful dream. The girl clenched her eyes, inhaled and gathered all her strength to look at the Dark Side. But nothing had changed, the white day still shone in front of her the same way.
«Are you awake?» Alisher smiled.
«I think I am not, what is it, Alisher?»
«It’s the real. Want we go for a walk?»
«For a walk?»
«Yes.»
«But we have to go to the Abyss of the Doomed. Time is short, said the Guide.»
«Time here doesn’t count. So we can walk.»
And they walked out of the park into a wide avenue, the likes of which Radha had not seen even at home before she came to the Dark Side.
There was a subtle scent of roses and sunshine in the air. The air wanted to… poetically it would be poetic to say drink, but it wanted to be eaten, cut into chunks and eaten.
«Oh, I know this bench,» Radha pointed out suddenly, «we used to rest on it. Only it was dark. And now…»
«Yes, this is that place.»
Alisher led her to the shore of the turquoise lake, behind which light houses stood, the paths in the park were clean and cozy.
It was so calm and good, Alisher was silent, and Radha was grateful to him for that, he led her somewhere, sometimes offered to sit down, looked into the distance and then they walked again. The girl gazed at the bright, strange city. Fountains were running, lights shone behind huge transparent storefronts.
«May we go in? Or it’s forbidden?» she asked.
«Yes, let’s go in.»
They entered the nearest store. And Radha held back a shriek. It was so beautiful inside, like a museum or a palace.
«What is it?»
«A store»
«Why is there so much stuff?»
«Because it’s the real»
«What does that mean, the real?»
«I’ve already explained it. I can’t explain otherwise,» Alisher shrugged.
«The Real is what is made by people for people,» Radha repeated quietly.
They went into several more buildings, walked along the light-colored streets. And when evening fell, the streetlights and signs flashed, and it was light again.
The girl suddenly sighed.
«Why is there no one here?»
«There is, just not many ones,» Alisher objected.
Radha and Alisher sat on a concrete ledge and looked at the sunset. The sky played with all colors, evening rays illuminated the buildings, turning it into a bright fairy tale.
«Thank you, I don’t know what kind of magic it was, but if you hadn’t brought me to this magical city, I would have gone crazy here, probably,» Radha smiled.
Alisher smiled lightly.
«We have to go back to the Dark Side, don’t we?» Radha sighed.
«We’re already on the Dark Side. It’s just that we’ve been walking all day only on shards of the real one. That’s the only way to keep from going crazy in the darkness,» Alisher nodded behind Radha’s back.
The girl quickly turned around and saw the same shining monument, slightly dispersing the darkness around.
